Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix flour and a pinch of salt.

Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

Add just enough ice water to bring the dough together into a stiff ball.

Roll & Fill

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough very thin.

Use a saucer or cutter to cut into rounds.

Spread each round with softened butter and sprinkle generously with sugar.

Roll each piece tightly into a log.

Bake the Rolls

Place rolls in a buttered baking dish.

Bake at 400°F (200°C) until lightly golden brown.

Prepare the Milk Sauce
-
While the rolls bake, heat milk in a saucepan (do not boil).

Sweeten with sugar to taste and stir in the vanilla.

Finish & Serve

When the rolls are lightly browned, pour the hot milk sauce over them.

Return to the oven for 10–15 minutes.

Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

For extra richness, sprinkle the dough with a mix of brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped pecans before rolling.
