Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

    • In a large bowl, mix flour and a pinch of salt.

    • Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

    • Add just enough ice water to bring the dough together into a stiff ball.

  2. Roll & Fill

    • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough very thin.

    • Use a saucer or cutter to cut into rounds.

    • Spread each round with softened butter and sprinkle generously with sugar.

    • Roll each piece tightly into a log.

  3. Bake the Rolls

    • Place rolls in a buttered baking dish.

    • Bake at 400°F (200°C) until lightly golden brown.

  4. Prepare the Milk Sauce

    • While the rolls bake, heat milk in a saucepan (do not boil).

    • Sweeten with sugar to taste and stir in the vanilla.

  5. Finish & Serve

    • When the rolls are lightly browned, pour the hot milk sauce over them.

    • Return to the oven for 10–15 minutes.

    • Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra richness, sprinkle the dough with a mix of brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped pecans before rolling.

  • These rolls taste incredible with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.
